Description

Scaphognathus crassirostris
Named by August Goldfuss, 1831
Diet: Insectivore most likely (since scaphognathines were purely terrestrial according to Mark Witton) (it may have fed on other prey)
Type: Rhamphorhynchid (Scaphognathine) pterosaur
Size: 3-foot (90-centimeter) wingspan
Region: Europe (Germany)
Age: Late Jurassic (155.7 to 148.5 million BC; Kimmeridgian to Early Tithonian)
Enemies: Ground-dwelling theropod dinosaurs such as Compsognathus.
Episode: Walking with Dinosaurs Pilot (Unspecified) (vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/w…)
Info: This rhamphorynchoid pterosaur from Solnhofen, Germany was similar to its contemporary cousin, Rhamphorhynchus, but had a shorter head, lacks the beak at the front of the jaws, and has long teeth that are set upright rather than pointing horizontally. Comparisons between the scleral rings of this and modern birds and reptiles suggests that Scaphognathus may have been diurnal, spending most of its time hunting at day time, whereas contemporary pterosaurs such as Rhamphorhynchus and Ctenochasma were mostly night hunters.

Note: Based on skeletal reconstruction by Mark P. Witton.

I forgot about this! Here's another animal that appeared in the WWD Pilot along with Cetiosaurus, but didn't make it to the final version of the original program (replaced by Rhamphorhynchus in Cruel Sea). Since it was never described and specified, I decided that it could be Scaphognathus, due to its appearance and living in Europe. However, this pterosaur was not found in England, UK, the main setting of the pilot, but decided to add it for reasons anyway (Some of the animals that appeared in Cruel Sea came from Solnhofen Limestone Formation Germany, despite the episode being set in Oxfordshire, England UK and unlike most of the other animals that appeared in the episode such Eustreptospondylus, Cryptocliedus, Ophthalmosaurus, and Liopleurodon, they were in the correct age of the episode).

isn't this pterosaur a cousin of darwinopterus?
