Pinocchio Rex

Pinocchio as a newly discovered tyrannosaurid from Ganzhou, southern China called Qianzhousaurus sinensis. This smaller and sprightlier (29-foot, 1,800 pound) cousin of Tyrannosaurus rex from North America lived at the same time as T. rex (66 million years ago, Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous period) and was one of the last of the nonavian dinosaurs that ever survived before the K-Pg (Cretaceous-Paleogene) mass extinction event. But it differs from its famous, giant cousin, along with most other tyrannosaurids by having a thin, long snout with a row of horns on its nose. Two other tyrannosaurid species from Asia, Alioramus remotus and Alioramus altai, also have thin, long snouts. For a long time, the long-snouted tyrannosaurs were juveniles and it was unclear whether they were from a new a class of dinosaurs or simply at an early growth stage. But experts from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland said that the Qianzhousaurus specimen is of an animal nearing its adulthood. Following the discovery, a new branch of tyrannosaurs from Asia with very long snouts was created, known as the Alioramini. Since its snout was long and thin and its jaws were weak, Qianzhousaurus would have hunted much different prey than any other tyrannosaur. 

Since this dinosaur is nicknamed the "Pinocchio Rex" for the long, thin snout, I gave a Qianzhousaurus a facial look of the Walt Disney character with the smile, rosy cheeks, eyes, a red feather on his head (which was on his hat), and a cricket that's a reminiscent to Jiminy Cricket. 

I also draw Monstro the whale from the Disney move Pinocchio (1940) as a giant, fictional, undiscovered species of mosasaur, but only his head, because there was no room to draw the full body!
